What does “Using Self as an Instrument” mean?
“Use of self is the conscious use of one’s whole being in the intentional execution of one’s roles for effectiveness in whatever the current situation is presenting. The purpose is to be able to execute a role effectively, for others and the system they’re in, without personal interference (e.g., bias, blindness, avoidance, and agendas) … to have clear intentions and choice.”
Jamieson, Auron and Shechtman (2010)
“To be ‘aware of’ and ‘use’ our own emotional, perceptual and cognitive processes to create the impact that is needed in the system and bring our whole selves to the work we do.”
Mee Yan Cheung-Judge, (2001, 2012, 2018)
In the context of facilitation, the usage of “Self” as an instrument means having a high level of awareness of not just myself, but also the impact of my SELF, or my BE-ing, on my participants when I am with them.
Because I am a human BE-ing too, I am strongly intertwined with my facilitation and therefore will show up as myself (values, behaviours, words and all), regardless of whether I am aware of it or not, and create either a positive or negative impact on my participants.

COOL STUFF. – Gerauld. The trainer literally know his stuff well, can answer and explain everything for us to satisfaction. Totally earned all our respect. (Thumbs up)
I like the way the program is structured, activity followed by an explanation for the purpose of the activity.

Testimonials
I liked that the program was well organised with a trainer(Gerauld) who was extremely clear with what he was doing. Additionally, facilitation at the end of each activity helps us to learn more.
I’m amazed by how activities tie into the training program that made so much relevance during the debriefing.

Testimonials
First of all, thank you Gerauld Wong for the fantastic training. I felt that you showed us not just the warmth of a Master Trainer, but also the warmth of a Mentor and Friend. You opened a few insights for me and I am thankful for that.
Here are my 3 takeaways from this training:
- Be nimble and always be open to new ideas on how to make the training as interactive as possible.
- Become a organized trainer even though it does not gel with my personality. I’ve experienced the benefits of this logic system and I will imply it to my work.
- Have fun and always build/maintain relationship before content.
Thank you!

Testimonials
Personally, I enjoyed this Facilitator in Training (Virtual) despite it is an online session which I normally switch off or get very distracted. The connection with the facilitator and participants from across the (..) agencies built up is really something that makes me look forward to every FiT session. Something that I wish to achieve in my own program in future, where by participants enjoy the interactions and look forward to the training sessions.

Testimonials
- Personally, this program had showed me that in this challenging and changing times (Covid19 pandemic), to achieve training excellence (using new platform eg Zoom, Google Classroom, Skype etc. ) , I must continue with my learning, have an attitude that is constantly reflecting, searching for deeper understanding, exploring options, seeking solutions , so I can add meaning to training and imparting knowledge to my colleagues.
- I also enjoyed the program, as it gave me the opportunity to catch up with old, meet new faces (I think I’m the old one in this cohort) and have a chat on their respective roles.
- Did the program meet my expectations? Like Simon Cowell (AGT), a YES for me! Before I start this program, I thought it was just another MOI. When I checked in, I felt that there was collective goal and collective spirit amongst my fellow cohort mates – it resonated with me. Being around like-minded people was incredibly inspiring and I felt connected. This training validates me as a Manager, Coach, Trainer and I’m up-skilled in using Zoom 🙂
Thank you Gerauld! God Bless.

Testimonials
Firstly, I would like to take this opportunity to thank you for being so creative and passionate about your sharing. The following are the 3 biggest takeaways from this program.
- I think is a good way to get away from paper and to use more technology in the classroom. I learned about the different tools (ie google doc, Jam board, Zoom, PowerPoint as virtual background, etc) that are available and how engaging this tools is going to be for my virtual class in future.
- I gain better knowledge on the different techniques to conduct a facilitation, especially the 4F Questioning Framework (Facts, Feeling, Finding Future) and David Kolb’s Experiential Learning Cycle (Concrete Experience, Reflective Observation, Abstract Conceptualisation and Active Experimentation).
- This course is refreshing for me, as well as adding new knowledge. The sharing on managing learning disruptions helps me to identify the catalyst for disruption and address the situation appropriately.
Once again, Thank you so much for facilitating such a positive learning environment!
